Chapter Nine

“Director.”

O’Riley knew someone was calling him but he wasn’t ready to leave the dream. His wife…Angela…was there. She’d changed her mind about leaving him. He would take her back…forgive her. Nothing else mattered as long as they were reunited. He missed her so much…

“Director!”

O’Riley jerked awake and straightened. He blinked twice to clear his gaze. He’d fallen asleep at his desk. His face no doubt bore the marks of having slept on his hands. He clenched and unclenched his fingers to get the blood circulating again and to dispel the tingling sensation.

“What?” he snapped at Dupree. The man hovered over him like a frigging buzzard. O’Riley glanced at the clock on his desk—1:00 a.m.—then looked the intelligence analyst up and down. It irritated the hell out of him that Dupree could look so neat and polished at this hour. He’d obviously showered and shaved and changed into a fresh suit. Bastard. It wasn’t right to O’Riley’s way of thinking for a guy to look sharper than his boss. His own attire carried two days’ wrinkles. His white shirt, once crisply starched, had wilted about thirty-six hours ago.

Dupree grinned like an idiot. “We’ve got him, sir.”

O’Riley perked up. “Explain. Now.” He had no patience for Dupree’s beating around the bush.

“Late yesterday afternoon, Adam’s prints were entered into the FBI’s system for identification by an investigator at the Virginia State Police Department.”

“You’re kidding.” O’Riley closed the top button on his shirt and straightened his tie. Talk about a lucky break. “Where is he? What’s his condition?”

Dupree laughed nervously, then cleared his throat. “That’s the strangest part of all. He’s with Danielle Archer.”

O’Riley’s jubilant expression dropped. “I want details.”

Dupree shuffled through the written notes in his hand. “Our team leader questioned Investigator Scott Davidson in his home at a little past midnight. Davidson said that Danielle Archer had brought a man she referred to as a John Doe to his office to see if there was a missing persons report matching his description.”

O’Riley’s brow furrowed deeply enough to give him a headache. “John Doe?”

Dupree shrugged. “Davidson said that he got the impression our man had amnesia or something along those lines.”

O’Riley swore long and hotly. “What’s Medical saying about this?”

A long sigh accompanied another shrug from Dupree. “Medical says it’s possible, especially if there was enough trauma involved to damage the tracking device.”

“What’s the prognosis?” O’Riley’s guts had tied into knots. Adam was their top Enforcer. The best. Losing him would be a tremendous blow to the project.

“The injury may heal itself. There’s no way to know until a thorough examination is conducted. Long-term memories will more likely be preserved by his super gene encoding than short-term.” Dupree stared at the floor, his fingers fisted around his notes.

“What?” O’Riley knew there was more.

Reluctantly Dupree met his gaze. “There’s a chance that he may regain portions of his memory out of sequence which could prove to be a serious security risk. Medical is recommending—”

“Get out,” O’Riley roared. He had to think this through. Had to have a moment alone.
